The Freshman Maroon football team took on Lamar Wednesday night and came away with a 50-16 win. The first play of the game, Mitchell Steffen carried the ball 65 yards for a touchdown. Darius Anderson added the 2 points, and the Longhorns were off and running. Shortly thereafter, Anderson found the endzone for 6, and Chance Guajardo punched in the 2-point conversion. Still in the 1st quarter, Mikial Onu intercepted a ball to allow Josh Scruggs to score two plays later. Darius Anderson ended the 1st quarter with another touchdown to give the Longhorns a 28-8 lead. The 2nd quarter saw Anderson again in the endzone, and a Blake Whichard pass to DJ Thomas added the 2. In the 3rd quarter, Jairon McVea returned a punt for a TD, and Scruggs added 2. The Mustangs were able to score in the 3rd, but Scruggs countered in the 4th with his second touchdown. The Longhorns’ offensive line did a great job opening up holes to allow the backs through. The Maroon team is now 7-1 overall, 3-1 in district. The team will have a bye next week and return on November 1st to host Brazosport.
