The Longhorn men’s and women’s wrestling teams competed at the Berry Center this past weekend at the UIL Region III 4A wrestling championships. The women’s team had a very impressive showing by finishing 4th overall in the tournament. Wrestlers placing in 6th for George Ranch were Cyrena Maldonado at 185 pounds, Maria Cuaresma at 165 pounds and Shekina Bonner-Spiller at 148 pounds. Finishing in 4th was Alexandra Sanchez at 119 pounds. Placing 3rd was Naomi Minturn at 110 pounds. And the Regional runner-up in the 102-pound weight class was Loren Braun. Sanchez, Minturn and Braun will all be traveling to Dallas in two weeks to represent George Ranch in the UIL State Tournament. The men’s team managed to finish 6th overall in the tournament. Those placing 6th for George Ranch were Ryan Tse at 285 pounds, Nick Ramirez at 160 pounds and Alex Chartier at 132 pounds. Corey Chartier placed 5th and was able to challenge for – and win – the 4th state qualifier position at the 145-pound weight class. Jakob Marine finished in 3rd place at 120 pounds. George Ranch finished with two Regional champions. Josh Marine was champion at 126 pounds, and Garrett Brinneman at 182 pounds. Josh and Jakob Marine, Corey Chartier and Garrett Brinneman will also be traveling to Dallas to compete in the UIL State Tournament on February 14th and 15th.
