This weekend we also had 7 Longhorns represent GRHS at the 88th Annual Texas Relay Invitational. Kearah Nails, Destiny Rutherford, Geordann Yelder, Lisa Egege, Chigozie Ogbonna, Kandice Miles and Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford were the varsity girls track representatives to compete. Sophomore Lisa Egege qualified as the 1st individual qualifier in GRHS girls’ track history. Out of 87 runners, Lisa finished 47 overall in the 100-meter dash. In the 4×100 relay, the girls placed 66th out of 99 teams with Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford, Destiny Rutherford, Kearah Nails and Geordann Yelder. The Longhorns also broke the school record in the state ranked 4×200 meter relay and won their heat with ease. The girls ran 1:41.16 placing 19th out of 60 teams in that field. This relay included Kandice Miles, Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford, Geordann Yelder and Lisa Egege. The record was recently broken this year also at Bubba Fife relays. As the meet continued to roll with the nation’s best, the state-ranked girls’ 4×4 continued by making noise in prelims winning their heat, breaking the school record and being the first event ever to qualify for finals at a caliber meet like Texas Relays. They came into the finals being the 8th overall placed team and came out running a 3:51.19, beating out Coach Dutch’s alma mater, the defending 6A state champs from Converse Judson, by almost 1 second. This put the Longhorns ranked number 2 in the state for 5A, number 7 for all conferences and 18th in the nation! Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford, Lisa Egege, Kandice Miles and Chigozie Ogbonna were the members of this relay. The girls ran their hearts out and placed 5th overall out of 87 teams. Way to go, girls! The Longhorns finish out their regular season Thursday at the Clear Springs Chargers Invite.
