The girls’ varsity track and field team competed in the Region III-5A championships this weekend. The ladies qualified 14 ladies to this post-season meet, which is the most the team has ever qualified in the school’s history. Starting off with field events, we had junior Samantha Chartier compete in the girls’ High Jump. She made great attempts at opening height and slightly fell short to progress on to the next height. She competed well and wrapped up her season for this event. In girls Long Jump, senior Geordann Yelder had consistent jumps but fell 2 spots short to qualify to the finals. She performed respectably in the event this season, especially considering she picked it up her senior year. Freshman Kaitlin Vasquez competed in the girls Pole Vault and came out with a vengeance in the opening height. She made several great attempts at her personal record of 8’6″ and fell short of qualifying to the next round. Kaitlin had a progressively great season and finished it out this weekend. In the girls’ triple jump, sophomores Lisa Egege and Alexis White hopped, skipped and jumped their way in prelims, pushing forward vying to make it to the final round. Lisa Egege finished 9th overall out of 16. Alexis White leaped to a personal record of 36 feet 1 inch to score a point towards the ladies total score. The girls’ 4×100 relay placed 10th overall with its 2nd best time this season. Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford, Chidube Ogbonna, Kearah Nails and Chigozie Ogbonna sprinted towards the finish, running 48.53. Sophomores Alexis Thomas and Abisola Anifowoshe finished off a school record-breaking season in the girls’ 100m hurdles.  Current school record holder Abisola finished 13th and Alexis finished 11th overall, respectively. Alexis Thomas also qualified in the 300m hurdles and finished 10th as well, running her 2nd best time of the season at 48.83.  Sophomore Lisa Egege sprinted to a 5th place finish in the girls’ 100m dash, bettering her results by one place from her freshman year at the 2014 regional competition. This also earned points towards the team title. Seniors Geordann Yelder and Destiny Rutherford competed in the girls’ 200m dash, and Destiny finished 11th overall and Geordann finished 8th overall. Freshman Theresa McComiskey competed in the girls’ mile and placed 12th overall. She had a record-setting season breaking the school records in this event and also the 3200m run. The 400m school record holder Chigozie Ogbonna, blazed her way to a 4th place finish running a season best of 57.35 and also earned 4 points towards the team title. The girls’ 4x200m relay qualified this relay to the State meet for the first time ever and set the school record again for the 3rd time this season! Geordann Yelder, Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford, Destiny Rutherford and Lisa Egege literally fought to the finish beating out Fort Bend Bush to secure the second place State qualifying spot. This was a huge deal considering the ladies were ranked 4th coming in to the regional meet. These ladies ran their hearts out on this relay and did so with class. Kandice Miles was a part of this relay as well, as she helped the ladies earn their way to finals. The last event of the evening was the 19th Nationally ranked 4x400m relay, and the ladies showed how and why they are still number one in Region III-5A and now number two in 5A. The record-setting relay won this same event under our old 4A conference. The quartet of Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford, Chigoze Ogbonna, Destiny Rutherford and Lisa Egege did it again and broke their own school record by 3 seconds, running 3:48.05. Kandice Miles also contributed to this relay in prelims, running the 3rd leg to help the ladies progress. It was another fight to the finish as Lisa Egege beat out Fort Bend Marshall’s last leg as if it was a replay of the 2014 regional meet for first place. This qualified another relay to the 5A state meet, which is the most the girls have sent in school history. Our girls placed third overall at the Region III-5A meet, which is the highest place ever scored at this post-season meet. What an amazing season thus far, and we look forward to making more noise at the 5A state meet in two weeks in Austin. Great job, ladies!!!
