The varsity girls’ track team competed at Bubba Fife Relays and placed 7th overall out of 18 teams, scoring 46 points. Last year they placed 16th out of 19 teams, which shows the significant growth in the program. Starting off in the field events, point contributions were made by sophomore Lisa Egege placing 5th in girls’ triple jump with a personal best of 35 feet. Junior Silhouette Uzoka placed 3rd in the girls shot put with a throw of 32 feet. Leading off the running events was the girls 4×100 relay placing 6th overall with Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford, Chidube Ogbonna, Destiny Rutherford and Geordann Yelder. The girls nearly missed the school record by 3 tenths of a second running 49.85. Sophomore Lisa Egege beat the girls’ 100-meter school record running an 11.87. The original record of 12.02 was previously set by Mikayala Everett in 2012. The girls also placed 4th in the girls 4×200 meter relay and also broke the school record previously set last year in 2014 by Geordann Yelder, Destiny Rutherford, Chidube Ogbonna and Lisa Egege. Geordann Yelder, Chigozie Ogbonna, Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford and Lisa Egege ran an amazing relay beating that time from 2014. To close the meet with a bang, the girls’ 4x400relay ran the second best time in the school’s history and won with a time of3:53.84 to beat the second place team by a whole 5 seconds. Jazmyne Tilford-Rutherford, Lisa Egege, Kandice Miles and Chigozie Ogbonna set the tone of the meet by also breaking the Bubba Fife 11 year old meet record of 3:54.74 set by Fort Bend Hightower in 2004.
