The state qualifiers from the Longhorn wrestling team traveled to Dallas to compete in the 2014 UIL State Wrestling Championships on February 14 and 15. The Longhorns battled some fierce competition and were not able to come home with any medals. The Longhorns finished the season by sweeping all district titles, finishing 4th (girls) and 6th (boys) in the region and taking more wrestlers to State than last year. Great season, Longhorns!
The Longhorn men’s and women’s wrestling teams competed at the Berry Center this past weekend at the UIL Region III 4A wrestling championships. The women’s team had a very impressive showing by finishing 4th overall in the tournament. Wrestlers placing in 6th for George Ranch were Cyrena Maldonado at 185 pounds, Maria Cuaresma at 165 pounds and Shekina Bonner-Spiller at 148 pounds. Finishing in 4th was Alexandra Sanchez at 119 pounds. Placing 3rd was Naomi Minturn at 110 pounds. And the Regional runner-up in the 102-pound weight class was Loren Braun. Sanchez, Minturn and Braun will all be traveling to Dallas in two weeks to represent George Ranch in the UIL State Tournament. The men’s team managed to finish 6th overall in the tournament. Those placing 6th for George Ranch were Ryan Tse at 285 pounds, Nick Ramirez at 160 pounds and Alex Chartier at 132 pounds. Corey Chartier placed 5th and was able to challenge for – and win – the 4th state qualifier position at the 145-pound weight class. Jakob Marine finished in 3rd place at 120 pounds. George Ranch finished with two Regional champions. Josh Marine was champion at 126 pounds, and Garrett Brinneman at 182 pounds. Josh and Jakob Marine, Corey Chartier and Garrett Brinneman will also be traveling to Dallas to compete in the UIL State Tournament on February 14th and 15th.
The Longhorn Wrestling Program was honored to recognize its senior wrestlers last night at the tri meet with Friendswood and Terry. The Longhorns started the evening by defeating Friendswood 54-24. They then wrapped up the special evening by defeating Terry 63-6. The seniors are Mariana Casteneda, Felicia Estrada, Abby Gonzalez, Shirin Purnell, Dezmine Bell, Alex Chartier, Michael Corvo, Alex Davis, Jakob Marine, Josh Marine, Joey Minkel, Bryan Nguyen, Brock Pedraza, Nick Tripicchio and Daniel Valdez.
Girls – The Longhorn women’s wrestling team competed in the Longhorn Invitational this past weekend. They finished as tournament champions! Placing 4th were Naomi Minturn, Alanis Ventura and Maria Cuaresma. Placing in 3rd were Alexandra Sanchez and Mariana Castenenda. Placing in 2nd were Abby Gonzalez and Diana Luong. Loren Braun was the tournament champion in her weight class. Congrats, girls!
Boys’ JV Black – The Longhorn JV Black team took 6th place in the Longhorn Invitational this past weekend. Finishing in 4th place was Jordan Kendall. Finishing in 3rd place was Cameron Fehres. And the tournament champion was Caleb Martinez.
Boys’ JV Maroon – The Longhorn JV Maroon wrestlers won the Longhorn Invitational JV division this weekend finishing 69 points ahead of the 2nd place team. Placing 3rd was Myles West. Placing 2nd were Mike Elkhoury, Brian Nguyen and Nnamdi Omeludie. The tournament champions were Hunter Rubio, Brandon Yarbrough and Donell Brager-Hegger.
Varsity – The Longhorn Varsity men successfully defended their home turf this weekend at the Longhorn Invitational by repeating as tournament champions. The men finished 56 points ahead of 2nd place Humble HS to keep the trophy at home. Placing 4th was Alex Aronson. Placing 3rd were Joey Minkel and Ryan Tse. Placing 2nd were Dante Giordano, Josh Marine and Alex Chartier. The tournament champions were Jakob Marine, Corey Chartier, Brad Cross and Garrett Brinneman.
The Longhorn wrestlers competed in the Cy Fair ISD tournament at the Berry Center on January 3rd and 4th. There were 64 teams competing in the two-day tournament. Jakob Marine placed 8th while Maria Cuaresma, Garrett Brinnmeman, Josh Marine and Brad Cross all finished in the top 10. The Longhorns will be at home with JV on Wednesday, at Cy Lakes with Varsity on Thursday and will be hosting the 3rd annual Longhorn Invitational on Saturday.
The Longhorn varsity men’s wrestling team finished out December facing Friendswood and Brazoswood here at the Ranch. In the first dual, George Ranch defeated Friendswood by a score of 47-30. Winning for the Longhorns were Dante Giordano, Hunter Rubio, Josh Marine, Corey Chartier, Brock Pedraza, Nick Ramirez and Daniel Valdez. In the second dual, the Longhorns defeated Brazoswood 46-36. Helping to spur the Longhorns to victory were Brock Pedraza and Myles West.
Girls – The women’s varsity wrestling team took on Foster here at home last night. The fans that made it out to the match were treated to quite a showing by the Longhorns. Naomi Minturn started the night by defeating her opponent 11-1. She was then followed by three first round pins by Diana Luong, Shekina Bonner-Spiller and Maria Cuaresma. The run was topped off by a third round pin by Cyrena Maldonado. The Longhorns’ run ended with a final score of 45-6. The Longhorns will compete again on Saturday here at the Ranch in a Tri meet with Friendswood and Brazoswood. Wrestling starts at 10:00am.
Varsity – The Longhorn men’s varsity wrestling team dueled with Foster HS last night. The Longhorns started in a hole after a forfeit and a loss put them down 9-0. Ryan Tse pinned his opponent to get George Ranch moving, but after two more forfeits the Horns found themselves still down 21-6. But then senior Jakob Marine turned the Longhorns around and they never looked back with six straight wins including Jakob Marine, Josh Marine, Hunter Jessup, Alex Aronson, Corey Chartier and Brock Pedraza. All but one of those matches was a pin. After three more Foster forfeits, the Longhorns finished with a 57-21 win over the Falcons. The Longhorns will compete one more time before the holiday break. They will take on Friendswood and Brazoswood on Saturday here at the Ranch. Wrestling starts at 10:00am.
Last night the Longhorn wrestlers hosted their second JV Wrestlefest. Those who completely dominated were Brandon Yarbrough, Nnamdi Omeludike, Brad Cross, Charles Mudd and Colin Flannery. Those who were almost unstoppable included Anthony Monroy, Zyon Savery, Michael Corvo, Carter Feldhoff and John Buckner. The JV wrestlers have made incredible strides since the beginning of the season, and Coach Kirby is extremely proud of you!
JV Black – The JV Black wrestling team competed in the Falcon Classic this past Saturday. They finished 9th overall. Jordan Kendall and Jackson Figenshaw placed 6th; Brandon Yarbrough placed 4th; and Weston Calderwood placed 2nd.
JV Maroon – The JV Maroon wrestling team was very impressive at the Falcon Classic at Foster HS this past Saturday. The Longhorns were the tournament champions with 206 points, which was 70 points ahead of 2nd place Foster. The Longhorns’ 206 points was also the highest total out of all three divisions: JV, varsity boys and varsity girls. Placing 6th for the Longhorns were Brandon Johnson and Rene Martinez. Placing 5th were Bailey Reyhons, Craig Rubio and Carter Feldhoff. Placing 3rd were Michael Corvo, Brad Cross and Zyon Savery. Placing 2nd were Dante Giordano, Jordan Ramirez and Mikey Elkhoury. The tournament champions for the Longhorns were Alex Aronson and Ricky Boehck. Congrats, guys!
Girls’ Varsity – The women’s varsity wrestling team took part in the Falcon Classic wrestling tournament at Foster HS on Saturday. The ladies finished 3rd overall with 83 points, which was just one point behind 2nd place Cy Falls. Placing in 6th was Felicia Estrada. Placing in 5th was Diana Luong. Placing in 4th were Mariana Castaneda and Shekina Bonner-Spiller. Placing in 3rd was Alanis Ventura. Placing in second was Loren Braun. The tournament champions for the Longhorns were Alexandra Sanchez and Cyrena Maldonado. Congratulations!

The Longhorns finished 3rd overall behind 1st place Leander Rouse and 2nd place Cy Lakes. Placing 6th for the Longhorns was Nick Tripicchio. Placing 4th were Alex Chartier, Garrett Brinneman, Joey Minkel and Daniel Valdez. Placing 3rd were Josh Marine and Ryan Tse. Placing 2nd was Nick Ramirez. The tournament champion for the Longhorns was Corey Chartier. Way to go!
JV – The JV Longhorn wrestlers traveled to Friendswood HS last night to compete. Leading the way with wins were Nnambdi Omeludike, Baliey Reyhons, Brad Cross and Corey Chartier. Other standout performances included Jordan Ramirez, Ricky Boehck and Brandon Yarbrough.
Varsity – The men’s varsity wrestlers took on the Mustangs of Friendswood last night. The Longhorns jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead with pin by Joey Minkel and a win on points by Daniel Valdez. The lightweights helped George Ranch pull away with three pins in a row by Nick Tripicchio, Jakob Marine and Josh Marine. The Mustangs and the Longhorns went back and forth with victories, but a pin by Hunter Jessup and wins by Nick Ramirez and Garrett Brinneman helped seal the win. The Longhorns pulled away in the end with a score of 46-27.
This Saturday the men’s varsity, women’s varsity and JV will all compete at the Falcon Classic at Foster HS. Wrestling starts at 9:00am. Come out and support your Longhorns!
