Wrestling – Arm Bar Invitational Results

The varsity men and women wrestlers traveled to Clear Falls HS to compete in the Arm Bar Invitational. Both teams finished 10th overall with Loren Braun placing 3rd in the women’s division and Josh Marine placing 3rd as well in the men’s division. The men’s varsity and JV will travel to Friendswood HS on Wednesday to compete in a dual and the women’s varsity will travel to Morton Ranch on Thursday to take on the Lady Mavericks and Shoemaker HS.

Wrestling – Cy Ridge Classic Results

The Longhorn varsity men’s and women’s teams traveled to Cy Ridge HS to compete in the 14th annual Cy Ridge Classic. They competed against 41 of the best schools in the greater Houston area and some 5A state caliber competition. The women’s team finished 17th overall out of 33 teams. Loren Braun and Abby Gonzales both medaled in 6th place. The men’s team finished 15th overall out of 37 teams. Nick Ramirez medaled at 6th place. The men’s varsity, women’s varsity and JV will travel north on Tuesday to dual with Katy Taylor HS. Wrestling will start at 5:00pm.

JV Wrestlefest Results

Last night the Longhorn JV wrestlers took on Morton Ranch and Friendswood here at the Ranch. Most of our wrestlers were competing in their first wrestling matches. The Longhorns competed well and came away with a lot of positive starts to the season. Some of the rookies who show great promise include John Buckner, Ricky Boehck, Dante Giordano, Ben Howard and Zach Edwards. The Longhorn JV’s next competition will be at Katy Taylor HS along with the Varsity next Tuesday, November 26.

Wrestling – Cinco Ranch Tournament Results

The Longhorn wrestling teams started the season by competing in the Cinco Ranch varsity tournament. Only the best teams in the greater Houston area are invited. The women’s team finished 5th overall in a tournament full of returning state placers along with the 2013 state champion Cy Ridge team. Loren Braun finished 4th, and Abby Gonzales medaled in 3rd place in her first tournament!   The men’s team finished 9th overall with Ryan Tse placing 5th and Jakob Marine and Josh Marine medaling in 3rd place. The Longhorns will travel to Cy Ridge High School on Friday and Saturday to compete in the 32-team Cy Ridge Classic.

If you are interested in trying out for the men’s or women’s wrestling teams, you must go by room 1500 and sign up with Coach Kirby. The sign-up is MANDATORY for all new wrestlers whether you have already spoken with Coach Kirby or not.

Wrestling Weigh In

If you are a wrestler or you are interested in trying out, then you must complete the UIL weight certification. It will take place this Sunday, October 6th at 1:00pm in the Athletic Director’s building in the east endzone of Traylor Stadium. Please go by and see Coach Kirby in room 1500 for further details and the required paperwork.

Scholarship for Champions – DEADLINE IS SOON!

That is why we have partnered with the Houston Texans for the 9th annual Scholarship for Champions Program! We have extended the deadline to September 13thso you have plenty of time to nominate your deserving student athletes.

This scholarship awards eight $5,000 scholarships to high school student-athletes who have exhibited remarkable leadership in athletics, academics and community involvement. Now, we need you to help us identify them by submitting a nomination!

Specifically, each nominee must:

  • Be a full-time high school student scheduled to graduate in the Spring of 2014
  • Planning to pursue a college degree (enrolled in college in the fall of 2014)
  • Have participated in a varsity sport between August 1, 2012 and the present
  • Be nominated by a an administrator, coach or teacher

Join me in congratulating our very own Chris Greer and Chandler LeMaire for being selected finalists at the Touchdown Club of Houston Spring Sports Scholar-Athlete event, which took place last night. This event recognizes the top scholar athletes in the Houston area in UIL’s Olympic Sports. Chris was selected in Boys Wrestling and Chandler in Boys Swimming. Congratulations to both of you!

Senior Athlete Honors

Senior wrestler Chris Greer has been named a finalist in the Houston Touchdown Club’s Scholar Athletes awards for male wrestler. He is one of only four wrestlers in the entire Houston area who have made the finals. The winner will be announced at a dinner on May 22 at the J. W. Marriot in Houston.

Senior swimmer Chandler LeMaire has been named as a finalist for the Houston Touchdown Club’s Scholar Athletes awards. Chandler is among 4 other swimmers in the Houston area to be named as a finalist. This is a very prestigious award for Houston high school athletes. The Touchdown Club Scholar Athlete will be named on May 22, during the Touchdown Club banquet.
